Tucked away down a quiet commercial side street off Doncaster Road lies a diamond in the rough. Bob’s Your Uncle is Doncaster East’s newest cafe, offering hearty comfort food in the form of contemporary breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes.
Owned by the same family who have been in the restaurant and hospitality business for years, with more than nineteen Melbourne venues under their belt, Bob’s Your Uncle is clearly seasoned when it comes to an attractive interior layout and design that appeals to customers. Their relaxed open space, warm tones and natural light with greenery are a recipe for success in the local cafe industry.
Service is friendly and accommodating, with the staff’s down-to-earth attitude and conversational banter enhancing the customer experience beyond the average local cafe. When it comes to drinks, the coffee is enjoyably strong and served at a good temperature, whilst non-coffee drinkers can go for one of the smoothies for an enjoyable palate cleanser.

With a seasonal change to the Spring/Summer menu imminent, some of the current dishes may be swapped out for more warmer-weather-appropriate items, though the home-style comfort and seasonal freshness of their food will, no doubt, remain the same.
Arriving as a warm salad, Brussel Sprouts are cooked and tossed with pan fried pancetta, roasted walnuts, broccoli, spinach, cauliflower and chai-soaked raisins, all coated in a yuzu dressing. Tying everything together, the yuzu dressing tastes sweet enough to add some excitement to the dish without overpowering the freshness of the ingredients, whilst the generously plump raisins and thickly-cut pancetta exhibit a fine balance between sweet and salty flavours.

+ added Poached Egg ($2.00), Haloumi ($4.00)
Beef Brisket Burger is filled with melted vintage cheddar, brown onion puree, house made pickles, tomato and cos lettuce, served with a side of battered onion rings. Soft bread buns keep the thick strands of beef brisket inside the burger, with the creamy mayo sauce and melted vintage cheddar cheese adding elements of finger-licking decadence that all burgers should encompass.

For dessert, their special from last week was the Jaffa French Toast, featuring brioche bread soaked in egg and cooked french toast style, served with fresh orange segments, freeze dried orange and candied orange peel, edible flowers, mascarpone cream and warm chocolate pouring sauce. Deliciously sweet flavours were cut through by the hint of bitterness provided by the candied orange peel, with the chocolate-orange combination a proven winner.

Going through a slight trial phase, the team are testing out different french toast flavours to find the most popular one to go onto the new Spring/Summer menu, so it would be best to go and check them out to find out which one made the cut!
A great addition to the area, Bob’s Your Uncle is unrivalled in offering nourishing cafe food that provide good value-for-money, in a warmly welcoming ambience. A couple of communal tables towards the back cater for large groups, whilst the front area is sufficiently spacious to allow prams to come through, which is ideal in this family-orientated neighbourhood.
Note: I dined at Bob’s Your Uncle cafe as a guest after winning a competition. Thank you to the managers and staff for their friendly hospitality throughout our experience.
